This is a diagram of a train car that was converted from passenger operation to carry wounded soldiers to a large general hospital in a large city. It could carry 33 wounded soldiers. Alternate seats were removed and replaced with wooden slats. The leas seriously wounded were hung from stretchers suspended from above by rubber loops to cushion the vibrations. |
| This is a sketch of the two-wheeled ambulance design used during the war. It had a horribly bumpy ride, and many soldiers died from riding in it when they were wounded. Four-wheeled ambulances were also used, and they had a much less bumpy ride. |
