Worm On The Loose! - Patch Your System
There is a Worm that was discovered on 8/11 by the name W32/Lovsan.worm, W32.Blaster.Worm and WORM_MSBLAST.A. It works by Exploiting a hole in Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server.
The way this worm works, you only need to be connected to the Internet for it to attempt to infect your computer, you don't have to be Web browsing or reading your email.
  • On Microsoft Windows 2000, it will cause an error "svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows" to appear when it attempts to infect your machine.
  • On Microsoft Windows XP, it will bring up a message about shutting down in 30 seconds and by this point it has successfully installed on your computer.

Microsoft Windows ME and Windows 98 are not affected by this exploit or worm. No report on if any other Microsoft Windows operating system is affected or not. All non-Microsoft operating systems such as Apple Macintosh, Unix, GNU/Linux, and BSD are not affected by this worm.
Here is a virus removal tool and instructions for this worm provided by McAfee or this virus removal tool and instructions provided by Symantec/Norton and patches for Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP provided by Microsoft.
What you need to do if your using a vulnerable system
  1. Determine which version of Windows you are running and download and run the patch for your system from the link below . If you are not sure, you may go to Start, Run and type 'winver' and click OK.
  2. Download the removal tool. Follow the instructions for the removal tool you downloaded.
  3. Download and run the patch for the denial of service attack explained below the table.

Step 1 - Patch Your System *Step 2 - Remove the Worm Step 3 - Patch Against DOS Attack
Windows XP Windows XP Windows XP
Windows 2000 Windows 2000 Windows 2000
* If your computer is not infected, skip step 2. But patch your system or you will be infected!

Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP can be affected by a Denial of Service due to scans from the virus looking for a target to infect, even on properly patched systems. Here are patches for this problem for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP provided by Microsoft.

What you need to do if your using a vulnerable system
  1. Download the patch for your system from the link above or from Microsoft's website.
  2. Run the patch.

Beginning August 16th through the end of the year, this virus is conducting a Distributed Denial Of Service attach against the Microsoft Windows Update website, in an attempt to make it impossible to receive updates and patches for Microsoft products. Microsoft has moved their domain so the virus will fail to do this. The new address for Mircosoft Windows Update is http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
