Chapter 16  Representing Data

Information can be displayed as a table or a graph

We will Learn

To read and make a pictograph
to read, make, and compare data from bar graphs
To read bar graphs that look different but have the same data
to show comparisons of data in graphs
to use a graph to solve a problem

Lesson 1

A Pictograph shows data using pictures.

The key is at the bottom of the graph and tells what each picture represents. (each fish is equal to 10 fish)

Each row needs a label that tells the defines what the data is about.

Each graph needs a label that defines or tells what the data collected talks about.

Lesson 2

  1. Make a pictograph recording your silverware; knives, forks, and spoons at home. (Use a tally chart to record your data)  example of table layout below
  2. Decide what picture you could use to represent the silverware counted.
  3. Be sure your key tells what each picture stands for.
  4. Write some questions that someone could answer using your pictograph.

Lesson 3

Bar Graphs use bars to stand for data.

The scale helps you to read the numbers each bar shows.

Horizontal bar graph, the bars go across form left to right.

Vertical bar graph, the bars go up.

Lesson 4

  1. Make a bar graph recording your silverware; knives, forks, and spoons at home. (Use a tally chart to record your data) example of a table layout below
  2. Make a scale represent the silverware counted.
  3. Be sure your scale tells what each bar stands for.
  4. Write some questions that someone could answer using your bar graph.

Lesson 5  Comparing Data

By looking at the difference in the length of the bars you can compare data.  A Bar graph lets you see quickly which is greater or less, and if the difference is a little or a lot.

Check out these web sites to practice making Graphs and comparing data in graphs;

1. Dinosaur Graph

2.    Sharks Graph

Try making up your own questions for your graphs that compare data.

Lesson 5   Use a graph to solve a problem

Sometimes to solve a problem you need to use information/data from a graph.

Data in a graph is organized, you can compare amounts easily, and information is easy to understand.

Assessment...

Know these terms;

pictograph        bar graph        scale        key        horizontal        vertical

Can you use graphs to answer questions?

Can you collect data and make a table/graph to show your results?

Do you know the difference between a vertical and horizontal bar graph?

How are bar graphs and pictographs alike?  How are they different?

Can you use information from a graph to compare data?
