Making Equal Groups

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
addend + addend + addend + addend = product
4 groups of 3 = 12
factor x factor = product
4 x 3 = 12
If groups are equal, then you can add to find the sum or you can multiply to find the product.

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20
addend + addend + addend + addend + addend = product
you can add equal groups to find the sum
or you can multiply equal groups
5 groups of 4 = 20
5 x 4 = 20
factor x factor equals the product

You can draw a picture to help you solve a problem. Here's how...
Mrs. Smith knitting a sweater for each of her three children. Each sweater needs 5 buttons. How many buttons will Mrs. Smith need to buy at the store to finish the sweaters?
Draw a circle to represent each of her children. Hint... she has tree children, so you should of draw 3 circles.

Now draw five dots in each of the circles to represent the buttons needed to finish the sweaters.
Count all the dots 1,2,3,4,5 ...... 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 ...... 11,12, 13, 14, 15
3 x 5 = 15 buttons (always label answers)
Order Property of Multiplication
You can arrange the factors (numbers) in any order and the product is the same.

Number line can be used to skip count;
6 x 2 = (starting at zero take six steps of two)
The Zero Property of Multiplication any factor multiplied by a zero has a product of zero.
The One Property of Multiplication states that any factor multiplied by one has a product of itself.
Hint to Master the 4's 4 = 2 + 2
So 4 x 6 = _______ or (2 x 6) + (2 x 6)
