Lon Po Po        Types of Sentences

 

Every sentence begins with a capital letter.
A statement (declarative sentence) tells something.  It ends with a period.

The children's mother went to visit their grandmother.

A question (interrogative sentence) asks something.  It ends with a question mark.

How did the wolf get in the house?

A command (imperative sentence) tells someone to do something.  It ends with a period.

Read the story carefully.

An exclamation (exclamatory sentence) shows strong feeling.  It ends with an exclamation mark.

A wolf is very scary!

Quotation marks are used to set off the exact words of a speaker.
A comma is used to set off the name of a person spoken to directly.

   Mom said, "Be sure to lock the door."

See if you can identify which type of sentence these are;

  1. Where does the story take place?
  2. Read the story twice before you answer the questions.
  3. This story is like the story Little Red Riding Hood.
  4. It's a great story!
