Chapter 18  Classifying Plane and Solid Figures

Geometric figures can be combined or separated to make other geometric figures.

Learn to

To identify, sort, and compare solid figures by the number of faces, edges, and corners
To identify plane figures and identify solid figures by the shapes of their faces
To learn what a plane is and what plane figures are.
To identify and extend patterns using plane figures
To use patterns to solve problems

Lesson 1 Sorting, and Comparing Solids

Solids are 3-dimesional; they have height, width, and depth.
Some solids have faces, edges, and corners.

A face is a flat surface of a solid.
An edge is a straight line where 2 or more faces meet.
A corner or vertices is where 2 or more edges meet.

Lesson 2 &3 Tracing and Naming Faces

Find solid shapes in your home and trace each of its faces.

Identify the solid by the the types or number of faces, edges, and corners that make up that solid;

What solid has no edges, no faces, and no corners?
What solid has a rectangular face, 5 corners, and 4 triangular faces?

Lesson 4 Plane Figures

A plane is a flat surface that goes on and on, like a sheet of paper. A plane figure is a closed figure in a plane. Plane figures are flat.

Identify shapes in your environment as having all straight lines, all curved lines or both curved and straight lines.

Lesson 5  Patterns with Plane Figures

A pattern is something that repeats itself.
