All  animals in all habitats need food, water, and shelter.

A Summer Day in the Forest -

Plenty of food, water, and shelter...

Different habitats in the forest have different temperatures.
Large ferns need a cool, damp habitat.
Blueberry bushes and goldenrod need a lot of sunshine.
Water lilies need shallow water of ponds and lakes.
Deer - The Pittsburgh Zoo - Wildlife
spring/summer - plenty of grass and plants to eat
drink water from lakes. ponds, and streams
come out to the edge of the forest for food around dawn or dusk
winter -digs under the snow for grass to eat
gets 'drink' from snow that melts in its mouth
when snow is too deep, eats twigs and branches
grow a thicker fur in winter
stay in the thicker parts of forest out of the sold wind

Frog - http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/commerce/account/frogs/frog.htm
spring/summer - live near water
eat insects
winter - spend winter buried in the mud at the bottom of a lake or pond

Chipmunk - CHIPMUNK WORLD
spring/summer - hunts for acorns
lives underground nest
winter - stays in underground nest
eats acorns it stored during the summer
Woodpecker - http://birdsource.cornell.edu/gbbc/birdid/dowp/index.html
spring/summer - drills holes in trees to find insects to eat
long sticky tongue
winter - finds his food the same way as in summer; drills holes to find insects
Rabbit - Snowshoe hare
spring/summer - eats many kinds of leafy plants
winter - dug hole in snow beneath a bunch of logs lined with dry grass and leaves for warmth
can't find grass so it eats other food

Forest changes as winter comes... water freezes and food is covered by snow

Each living thing is well - suited to its habitat;

cactus - can live for long periods of time without water
fern - needs shade and lots of water
beaver - builds lodge in the water
roadrunner - gets most of its water it needs from eating small animals
rattlesnake - often eaten by hawks and roadrunners

Which of these animals would you find living in a desert or in a forest habitat?

Winter in the Forest -

So cold that water in lakes and ponds freezes and becomes ice.

Water can have three forms in nature;

liquid

solid

gas

known as the states of matter.

snow cover the forest
many plants have died or are covered by snow
many insects and smaller animals have died or are underground that were food for other animals
temperatures are freezing animals need shelter to keep warm

Your Habitat

The ways people survive in their habitat are different from the ways that animals survive.
people change habitats and build their own shelters
people can change/control the temperature of their habitat /heat homes in winter / cool homes in summer
people change clothing for the weather
people bring water to were they need it /pipes, plumbing
ship food from around the world to eat /planes, trains, trucks
Both people and animals need food, water, and shelter
people and animals share habitats
each habitat has different conditions; heat, cold, dry
each living thing has different ways of surviving in its habitat

Checkpoint -

1.  What do forest animals eat in summer?

2.  How does winter affect the feeding habits of animals in the forest?

3.  Why don't beavers live in the desert?

4.  How are the ways that people and other animals survive different?
