Module F Chapter 1 Clean Water

Lesson 1.2  Pollution Solutions

From Drains to Waterways

Pipes collect water and carry the wastewater away from your house through sewers to sewage treatment plants.
Waste water contains germs that can cause disease and other harmful materials.
Sewage treatment plants can clean waste water before it enters rivers and lakes.
Sewage treatment plants can remove most of the harmful material in wastewater to help keep rivers and lakes clean.
It's best not to dump harmful materials down drains.
Most cities have Sewage Treatment Plants.

Dirty water passes through screens that keep out trash, and other large objects. Some dirt and other solids settled out of  the water. Air is bubbled through the water. More dirt and other small solids settle out. Water filters through materials that remove remaining solids. Chlorine is added to water to kill germs that cause disease.
Sewage treatment plants remove harmful materials  when they clean waste water before it is returned to rivers and lakes to help keep our waters clean.
No all harmful materials, like oil,  can be removed easily from waste water so some materials should not be dumped down drains.

Preventing Water Pollution

A joint effort is needed to keep our waterways clean.

Checkpoint...

1.  How do sewage treatment plants help prevent water pollution?

2.  How can farmers and factories help prevent water pollution?

3.  Make a poster about preventing water pollution that shows what different people can do.
