Singular Plural Nouns

A possessive noun is a noun that shows who or what owns something.
Add an apostrophe and an s to a singular noun to make it possessive.

 

Examples of singular possessive nouns:
the painting own by the Queen becomes the Queen's painting
the boots belonging to the guard becomes the guard's boots
the stairs of the tower becomes the tower's stairs

 

A possessive noun shows ownership.

I saw the balloon of the boy change from white to green.

Ask yourself... Who owns something?

   I saw the balloon of the boy change from white to green.

Ask yourself... What do they own?

   I saw the balloon of the boy change from white to green.

Rewrite the sentence to show ownership using for singular possessive noun an (') apostrophe followed by an s.

   I saw the balloon of the boy change from white to green.  becomes...

   I saw the boy's balloon change from white to green.

Try it out for yourself... read a paragraph from a story and see if you can find any singular possessive nouns, or write your own sentences using singular possessive nouns.
