Chapter 1 Understanding Communities

Geography Skills - Map Scale

Use map scale to measure real distances between places
Map scale shows that a certain distance on the map stands for a certain distance on the Earth.
A scale is the line that with marks that stand for miles, feet, or a given distance.
Not all maps have the same scale; map may show a larger or smaller area.
A Map showing fewer miles per inch will show less area. A map showing more miles per inch will show more area.

Try using map scale on your own;

Pick out two different cities on the maps and using a ruler measure the distance between the two places.  Then using the scale on the map figure out how far that would be in real distances.
