  A Community by the Ocean

 Paracas, Peru

  1.  Located on the Pacific Ocean

  2.  Its western border is the Pacific Ocean.

  3.  Continent of South America

  4.  Ocean is important to their lives, and has many natural resources.

  5.  Concerned about protecting the ocean and its resources

 

Living in Paracas

  1.   Small community only 100 houses

  2.   Fishing is important and part of their culture.

Peninsula is land that has water on all sides but one.

Island has water all around it.

  1.   Paracas is on a peninsula.

  2.   Living on ocean is a lot of fun.

Coast is land next to an ocean.

          A Rich Peninsula

  1.     1.   Important resource is wildlife… fish, whales, turtles, and crab.

  2. Anchovies are small fish shipped all over the world.

Wildlife are animals that live naturally in an area.

  1.   Birds are an important resource.

  2.    Many birds migrate to Paracas.

  3.    Visitors come to see wildlife.

  Caring for Resources

  1.  Paracas is becoming polluted.

  2.  Waste from nearby businesses are being dumped in ocean.

  3.  Some fish unsafe to eat.

  4.  People are keeping beaches clean.

  5.  Businesses are being more careful about dumping.

          Why It Matters

                   By working together people are able to protect the Earth's natural resources.

          Main Idea;

   Paracas is an ocean community in the country of Peru in South America.

   Paracas has many natural resources.

   Pollution is dangerous to people and wildlife.

   People are working together to fight pollution in Paracas.

  1. California Condor is the largest flying bird in United States. Hunting, pollution, and destruction of habitat have threatened their existence.
  2. Black Rhino from Africa is threatened because their horns are used for medicines.
  3. Giant Pandas from China are losing their habitats and so the bamboo trees they eat aren't as plentiful as they need.
  4. Saltwater Crocodiles from Australia and Asia are hunted for their skins to make products like purses.
  5. Sperm Whale has been hunted for the food, oil, and bone around the world in our oceans.
