Lesson 2  Citizens in Action

People can be good citizens in many  ways.

  1.  Citizens have responsibilities.

  2.  Community leaders can make a difference.

  3.  It is important to vote in elections.

 

Being a Good Citizen

  Pledge of Allegiance is a promise to be loyal to your country and the flag is a symbol of our country.

Participating in government is a responsibility of citizens.

Citizens Get Involved

Communities work best when people work together and help each other.

Amanda Reed – Tampa, Florida – volunteer for Meals on wheels that deliver meals to elder and disable who can’t get out to shop, and cook.    

  Free Bicycles

·       Joe Keating – Portland, Oregon – United Community Action provides free bicycles for people to use on the streets to get around town more easily and help to protect the environment.  

 

Becoming a Leader

·       John Russo – Oakland, California –

  1.  Ran for office on the City Council of Oakland.

  2. Told people his ideas for how to improve Oakland.

  3.  Helped to make laws to help people find housing and encourage citizens to volunteer.

  4.  Believes that children are our future leaders and their views are important to listen too.  

     Look at the Mayville News and share with the class someone who has contributed to our community, or some one who has been a community leader in our town.
