The English colony of Jamestown struggled hard to survive in their new environment.
Powhatan and the English Meet

| England hoped that the colony would provide resources and riches for them. | |
| Colonists who settled in Jamestown hoped to build a new community and get rich. (Colonist is someone who lives in a colony.) |

John Smith chosen leader.
- "if you don't work, you don't eat"
- asked Powhatan for help (taught colonist how to grow corn and other food)
- winter of 1609 called "the starving time"; little food, very sick/some died..
The Colony Survives
| John Rolfe began to grow tobacco. Tobacco sold for a lot of money. | |
| John Rolfe married Pocahontas in 1614. Their marriage lead to peace between the English and the Powhatan. | |
| The colony began to grow, and other colonies(13 colonies) grew along the Atlantic Ocean. |

Pilgrims of Plymouth came seeking religious freedom in 1620. Pilgrims were helped by the Wampanoag. Wampanoag taught the Pilgrims to fish and farm. | |
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn who was a Quaker in 1682. He formed a peace agreement with the Delaware Indians. | |
Savannah was the first colony in colonial Georgia in 1733, These colonists owed money to England and repaid the money by farming. | |
