  Writing Process - Description

    A descriptive paragraph describes a person, place, or thing. A good descriptive paragraph uses words the help the readers to see, hear, smell, taste, or feel the subject the writer has written about.  It paints a visual picture in the reader's mind.  Descriptive paragraphs use exact and interesting words in describing a person, a place, or a thing.

Organization of paragraph;

  1.   Topic Sentence -tells what you are going to write about in your paragraph.
  2.  3 or 4 Detail Sentences - give the reader a picture of how things looked, felt, smelled, tasted, sounded using exact and interesting words
  3. Last sentence should be the best detail about your topic, or sum up all of the paragraph.

 

Writing Process - Description

Describe what an "Eek" is.  What would it look like?
Describe a really bad storm you experienced.
Describe a special event in your life
Describe your favorite food without naming it.  Have your friends guess what it is by reading your description.

Pre-Writing

    make a list on things you can write about
   share with a friend your ideas for your paragraph

Drafting

   as you write be sure you use words to describe that help to draw a visual picture in your reader's eyes like, long, red, spinning, loud, etc.
   use lots of details

Revising

Exchange papers with a friend and help each other by editing their paragraph. Point out what is good and what can you would change to make it better.  
Ask yourself?
What do I like about the writing?  What details stand out?  Is something missing?
Does it make sense? or is something unclear?
Is it in a logical order or does it jump around?

Proofreading

final check for
spelling
punctuation
grammar     use grammar checklist
organization of sentences
readability ... 

Publishing

recopy on wide-lined notebook paper with your best penmanship or type using 'Word' on the computer
you may choose to add a picture to your project
check it over again for any errors
share your paragraph with your classmates

Advanced

The writer has vividly evoked an event or object, using sequential order and at least three types of sensory details.  Writing paints a visual picture using words.
3

Proficient

The writer has successfully written about an event or object, using sequential order and more than one type of sensory details.
2

Basic

The writer has described an event or object.  But the details may not all be visual.  Attention to organization may not be consistent.
1

Minimal

The writer may have described an event or object but there has been no attempt to organize the material.
