Ethanol plants produce a huge volume of spent
corn, so-called distillers grain.
This is then dumped on the livestock feed
market at low prices. The primary beneficiaries of this are huge
factory farms that buy semi-loads at wholesale rates directly from the
plant, while smaller operations must buy through dealers. It's no
wonder that factory farms are some of the most rabid supporters of ethanol.
This WISPIRG (Wisconsin Public
Interest Research Group) report describes how factory
farms threaten Wisconsin's clean water; two of Dodge County's
most outspoken champions of ethanol appear on this report's list
of animal factories (requires Adobe Acrobat)!
