Saturday, Feb 23rd:   Special concert at the Mount Horeb Auditorium with Bob Bovee and Gail Heil.   We will be performing as a duo.  More information as follows:

Cris and Ann Plata will perform at the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society benefit concert.  Cris Plata was born in South Texas, the son of migrant workers.  Those early days of living in different migrant camps and following the harvest from region to region, exposed Cris to a wide range of musical experiences.  His early musical  experiences reflect his Mexican heritage.  This heritage includes Norteno (Northern Mexico border music), conjunto (elements of both European and Mexican music fused by early residents of South Texas), and ranchera (Mexican country) music.  Today, Cris describes this as "Mexican root's" music. However you describe Cris Plata's music, the results are uniquely entertaining. Ann Plata will join Cris for this event. Ann's bass playing and backing vocals perfectly complements Chris's music.

Bob Bovee and Gail Heil, who many will remember from their 2003 visit to Mount Horeb, will again provide toe tapping music to the audience. The audience can expect a wide range of styles, ranging from authentic cowboy songs, ragtime and blues, to Tin Pan Alley favorites and Yodels. Bob Bovee is a Nebraska native whose family sang and played the old-time songs. Many of the western and railroad songs he does were learned from his grandmother. He plays banjo and autoharp, sings and yodels, and can drive a dance band with his guitar and harmonica. Gail has been a full time traditional musician/singer/dance caller/music instructor since 1976. She sings and plays fiddle, banjo, guitar and autoharp. Her calling reflects the styles of old time dances commonly done throughout the Midwest in an earlier day. Originally from Missouri, Gail learned a large part of her music and dance repertoire from older Ozark performers, and is nationally known for her attentions to perpetuating our traditional heritage of roots music. Gail has been a Master Fiddler with students in both Iowa and Minnesota through the State Arts Apprenticeship Programs. Bovee and Heil's songs was described by the "Come For to Sing" publication as, "bitingly authentic, without ever sounding imitative, and their vocal and instrumental styles blend beautifully".

The evening would  not be complete without a special Historical Society production. For this event, the Society will transport audience members back in time,  for a rail trip through the area. Expect surprises around every curve at this special Society event! The show starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $12 the day of show. Tickets are available at Prairie Book Store in Mount Horeb, or can be reserved by phone at 608-845-7312.
