Hidden Proxy Server
(7/23/04) A new hoax/virus going around the internet is one disguised as an email from the "powerweb.net team". It tells you that your mailbox has been compromised, and now contains a hidden proxy server. It then tells you to open the attached file and follow the instructions. Unfortunately, the file is infected with a virus.

Remember, that most large companies (Power Web Connect included) do not send you files attached to an email unless we tell you that we are because you have just talked to someone in tech support. Almost always, we send you information and then direct you to a site where you can download the file. But NEVER via email. And NEVER without telling you in person first. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the Administrator.

Sasser Worm
(5/3/04) We have been overrun with calls about the Sasser Worm virus. This virus infects you even if you don't open your email. It exploits an old hole in the Windows operating system. Once again, we remind our customers to download any critical updates for windows (See the previous home page post) about this problem. More information on how to clear it up, can be found here.

Big Companies Don't Use Email for This
(3/29/04) There have been several scams going around lately via email. The latest ones are the ever-popular Ebay and Citibank asking you to click on a link in the email and type in your personal information. These are all hoaxes designed to make you think there is something wrong with your account and you need to check it out, or if you know you don't have an account, to find out what they are talking about.

Click here for some basic rules of thumb whenever dealing with emails that ask you more information.

Bagle Virus Variant
(3/22/04) Several variants of the Bagle Virus (bagle.r, bagle.s, bagle.t) have surfaced in the last couple of days. These infect computers without having to open the attachment. They apparently exploit a hole in Windows that was fixed by a patch about 5 months ago. You can read more information here. You should always make sure you have done your Windows Updates regularly. You can do this by clicking on Start then All Programs then Windows Update and then following the prompts. If you haven't done this in a while, it could take quite some time to complete them, but it is well worth it.

Update Your Windows!
(3/22/04) If you have never done it, or haven't done it in a while, you should make sure that you have done your Windows Updates. You can do this by clicking on Start then All Programs then Windows Update and then following the prompts.
Once you are caught up, it doesn't take much work to keep Windows updated. You will find, however, that Service Pack 1 is probably the worst update to do. It is approximately 125 megabytes, which will may take several hours to download and then install. If you haven't done your updates because of problems with Service Pack 1 (SP1) downloads, please
email the Administrator and we will arrange to get you a copy of SP1 on a disk. This is for Windows XP users and is available for customers of Power Web Connect only.

Warning: Domain Registry of America "DROA" Renewal Confusion
We have discovered that a company called, "Domain Registry of America", has been contacting our customers with deceptive mail and email messages about domain transfers. The goal of the e-mails and letters is to trick our customers into transferring their domain names away from Power Web Connect. The e-mails falsely claim to be a response to a transfer request made by our customers.

Power Web is a full-service hosting company. We take care of your domain registration and renewals.
If you EVER have any questions about your domain, and it's hosted by Power Web, please call us, or email us.

Billing Scam/Virus
(1/22/04) There's a new scam going around via email that says "Billing Notice From powerweb.net's Accounting Dpt", which tells you that your bill is past due and if you don't click on a link, your service will be disconnected. Remember that anything from Power Web will always say "Power Web" or "Power Web Connect". We never abbreviate our name when we write it. Also, we never send a bill to anyone and show other customer's addresses on the to: or cc: lines. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Administrator.

PayPal Scam
We have been hearing more and more of a new scam that pretends to be a page from PayPal requesting that you go to their site and enter your credit card information. Remember that most reputable companies won't ask you to verify your credit card information and that almost all will require you to log in first. This site does not do that, so it should be that "red flag" that jumps out at you that there is something wrong. Here is an article that gives more details.

Best Buy Fraud
(6/18/03) We have been receiving reports of emails received by our customers concerning a credit card that was declined by Best Buy. The link looks like best buy.com, but it actually takes you to some other site. If you receive one of these, please disregard it. No major retailer would ever ask you to go to a website to verify a credit card number. Especially an unsecured site. As a precaution, we have begun trapping emails with the words "bestbuy" and "fraud alert" in them. If you have any questions, please contact the administrator.

Access for Brandon and Alto
(6/9/03) Power Web Connect is pleased to announce access to people living in Brandon and Alto. To be eligible for access, you must be paying Centurytel an additional monthly fee for local access to Waupun. For more information call us at 920-885-7860.

Horicon Chamber announces a new website!
A long time customer of Power Web Connect, the Horicon Chamber came to us looking for a fresh, new design that would incorporate their many area events, photos, businesses and information about the City. They knew that for a website to be successful it needs to be updated regularly. They wanted an easy way to perform the updates themselves to keep up with their ever-changing events. Power Web designed the site using attractive photos of the area and programmed the site in a dynamic design making it easy for the Chamber to update text and photos through a secure administration page. It’s as easy as data entry and it will keep residents and tourists well-informed of the many things that Horicon has to offer! Congratulations Horicon Chamber on the launch of your new website!

Updated Help Page
(2/16/03) We have updated our help pages to make it easier to use. It now includes sections on how to set up Outlook Express and all versions of Microsoft Outlook. You can access the help section by clicking on the word Support at the top of our home page, or by clicking here.

Sublenient Blocking
(4/11/03) Spam is on the rise. We have gone from blocking 20,000 messages per day to 120,000 per day. One of the things that some people have wondered is if we are blocking more messages, why does there seem to be less messages in the message center. This is because we have turned on a feature called "Sublenient Blocking". This feature allows the spam filter to filter up to 45% of the messages guaranteed as spam and discard them before they actually hit your message center. In our case, it's about 55% or about 65,000 messages per day. This means that you will have to spend less time looking through the message center if you do that regularly, since these messages were automatically deleted before they even reached your system.

View Hours Online
(2/7/03) If you are on the limited hour plan, you can view your hours online by clicking on the link on the left margin, or Clicking here. Please note that we only keep track of hours for people on the limited plan and hours for unlimited customers are not available.

Internet Search Registry
(2/7/03) If you own a domain and you receive a letter from the Internet Search Registry or "ISR" or Internet Corporate Listing Service or "ICL", that you owe a bill ranging from $29.95 to $69.95 for a domain submission, please be aware that this is NOT a bill. This is one of those "clever" sales tools (or misleading if you like) which sends you information about their company formatted like a bill. Careful study will show that the wording on the back says "By submitting payment you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of the agreement". You are not legally bound to pay for this. Power Web Connect provides free domain submission to its customers with domains hosted by Power Web Connect.

Don't Forget to Change Your Message Center Settings
(10/22/02) We have had several inquiries as to why the message center doesn't seem to block many messages. This is because by default the message center is set to the lowest level possible. And these settings are by individual email account. This prevents your messages from being blocked until you actually check out the message center and are comfortable with it. In order to get the best use out of our virus and spam blocking, you should make sure to configure it for your personal tastes. For specific instructions on how to configure your filter, click here. If you look at the right hand side of the home page, you will see that we are blocking about 50,000 messages per day.

Virus/Spam Scanning
(05/24/02) All accounts have been activated. Everyone should have an email in their mailbox that allows them to log on to their system. For those of you that have mailboxes that are full, and did not receive the message, please clean your mailbox and send a message to The Administrator or someone will be contacting you shortly. If you can't remember the link to log on, it's on the left side of our home page, or You can click here.

A couple of issues have come up with this, click here to common problems and solutions.

If you have more questions, you can check out our FAQ page devoted specifically to spam and virus protection, or send an email to the Administrator

If you decide you do not want this, you can send an email to our special mailbox and the administrator will turn off your account for you.

Virus Hoaxes Revisited
(12/6/02) We have had many calls and emails in regards to an email which directs you to search the windows directory and delete a file. Some of these files are SULFNBK.EXE and JDBGMGR.EXE. These are HOAXES. They prey on your fear of viruses to get you to delete these files. These files are used by Windows and will actually cause your computer to crash or become unstable. A good rule of thumb is that any email that directs you to delete files is a hoax. A virus scanner deletes and cleans the files for you. A reputable site like McAffee or Symantec or Anti-Virus.com may ask you do delete files, but make sure that's it's a reputable site before attempting it.

Virus Policy
(06/18/02) We still have people who are infected with viruses. This happened before our spam/virus scanner was put into place. We are sending out notices to let these people know, but many of these people have not responded and continue to attempt to send out copies of viruses. In an effort to stop this, customers who do not respond to a message from the administrator will have their internet service suspended until they make their computers virus free. A sample of the email message can be seen here.

Web Mail and AOL
(2/11/02) We have had few calls recently with people who are traveling and trying to access their mail through Web Mail from an AOL account. The problem is timeout errors or disconnection errors. The problem is caused by the way the AOL browser handles the Web Mail script interface (which is an AOL problem). To work around this, log on like you normally would to AOL, then minimize the AOL browser and open up Internet Explorer or Netscape. Thanks to Lynne M. for the tip..

How Your Virus Scanner Can Mess Up Your Email
(8/13/01) We get messages from time to time asking about an error that looks something like this:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'http', Server: 'pop3.norton.antivirus', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
This is caused by a little bug in the interaction between Outlook Express and Norton Anti-Virus. The way it works is that Norton Anti-virus actually intercepts all your email before your computer gets it and then decides if the mail is virus free. That's why the server says "pop3.norton.antivirus" instead of pwc.powerweb.net. Norton changed this when you installed it. The easiest fix for this is to reboot your computer and it normally goes away. If it is always a problem, bring up the Norton control panel and click on the Email Status button and double click on the email account and then turn off the option. Note that this will not check your emails as they come in. If auto-protect is enabled, you will be warned when you try to run or save an attachment with a virus, but they will not be checked.

Have You Ever Wondered ....
Did you ever wonder who the faces are behind Power Web Connect? Here is your chance to meet the people who make this company move.

Moving?
Are you planning on moving out of the area? Have you moved recently? Remember to put Power Web on your list of people to notify of your move to keep your service flowing without interruption. Also, Power Web is constantly expanding, so check to see if we are covering the area where you are planning on moving to.

Automated Withdrawls
If you are using a check card in place of a credit card for automatic withdrawls, keep in mind that if we take out your payment from your check card and the card is cancelled, the bank will take it out of your account anyway and charge you a service fee for being overdrawn on your checking account. It has happened. A credit card, however, will be denied, so there is no need to worry. Whenever you cancel a credit card or check card, and we have taken money from it in the past, make sure to notify us immediately, so we can get your information out of our records.
