I have built an on-line petition page. I don't know how much good it will do, but it can't hurt anything. Please go there and sign it.
(Aug. 8 - Letter to the Editor)
I am writing regarding the dangerous curve on State Highway 68 just north of Fox Lake. Most locals know the curve I'm referring to. They've seen the flower and memorial in the ditch on that curve.
On April 7, my son Shane and I left our home in Waupun to travel to LaCrosse to see my parents. The weather channel said light snow, but no traveler's advisories.
My beautiful 5 1/2-year-old Shane and I were talking and laughing as we followed three other cars into that turn. We weren't speeding. The three cars ahead of us made the curve safely. We did not. I lost control of my mini-van on what the police told me later was black ice. Unable to turn either way, or brake or accelerate, I realized that the oncoming snowplow was going to hit us as we crossed the center line. I tried so hard to get out of his way as I'm certain he tried to do the same.
I have seen hell, and it is holding your only child, covered in his own blood, beautiful gift of God, broken like a shattered vase or toy.
My little boy went home to be with Jesus that day. He gave what he could from his body to organ donation. He gave everyone around him 5 1/2 years of unconditional love. He is sorely missed.
Since that day, there has been only one set of footprints in the sand of my life. The weight of grief seems insurmountable, but I know that God will continue to carry those who love and miss that precious little boy.
I would like to be heard by the Fox Lake town council, the DOT or anyone who can do something about that curve. Shane is not the first to die on that road. Please contact me through the Daily Citizen. I keep hitting dead ends and getting the run around from both Fox Lake and the State of Wisconsin. I'm not interested in a lawsuit, only improving the safety of your children and loved ones while traveling Highway 68.
I want to thank the EMT's especially. I know they did everything they could. I want to thank the emergency room personnel, especially the two nurses who sat with me and told me how they had lost their babies, too.
I want to thank the police officers and other emergency responders for trying so hard to save my son. I especially want to thank Scott Ziorgen of the Dodge County Sheriff's Department for staying with me.
Thank you to all of the family and friends for everything, you know who you are and you know how much I love you.
