Note from X / Scapes... Are you going to read this page and not say anything about it??  Are you hoping you or your loved one's won't be a victim of a similar tragedy?  The only way to stop it is to send this page to the powers that be.  Please, make yourself heard.  Make your opinion matter!  A wise man once said, "If you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own!"

All right then, people. I can see there have been more than a few visitors to this site, indicated by the counter at the bottom of the page. I'm glad, on behalf of Shane's and Carl's families, and all the other victim's, that you're showing an interest in the story.

as of September 2001..............
Another young life was cut untimely short due to lack of planning or funds, or through some fault of their own...so the the State of Wisconsin would have you know.
Personally, I'm not so sure, as it seems suddenly, as of September 2001, they have it in their minds to change the road at least one year above their scheduled date! Why is this?? (We can only wish they finally came to their senses.....doing what the general voting populace wants them to do...however, you & I are both sure in our own minds that can't be the case. For the State to do the right thing?? Why start now?)

Who was related to someone we should have known about that died on this road????? I can't say..........I claim the Internet name of 'wyz1,' but am sorely lacking in that arena. I speak for myself, feeling it  needs to be done by someone...having good feedback from the local populace does nothing but drive me forward. After having to write up and print another senseless death due to the road, I feel that it again needs to be brought to the attention of the general public.
How many more young people must die?? This road is just one example of poor planning & maintenance on the state's part. Albeit the shortest Highway in the state...it's taken too many years to adjust it to modern travel. Can you imagine how long it will take the State to make the adjustments needed on longer stretches? Unthinkable!?

The intersection area of Highway's 73 and 33 are just as dangerous if not more so! Let's make that our next project!
With your help, we can make it so..........we made the state move one project up a year...that's a good start..........as long as their finally moving, let's keep 'em on the run!
Then again, that's just my philosophy..........anyone with me here?????????????

However, as for myself, I'm ashamed and disappointed that more of you won't speak up on the feedback page. It's not difficult to find. If you spent the five or seven minutes to look through this site, what's two more? I'm guessing that had it been one of your friends or family, you'd be only too glad to see something like this.
Please, reconsider. If you visit this site, give your feedback. Send it to your friends. Send it to your senators, representatives, the DOT. Let someone know your opinion matters

I have built an on-line petition page. I don't know how much good it will do, but it can't hurt anything. Please go there and sign it.

Somewhere along the line here, the DOT has become interested enough to have someone check these pages on a frequent basis. I know this because of the tracker attached to the counter. I, for one, am glad. On the other hand, I wonder what the repercussion to myself may be. To my knowledge the statements on these pages are true, or they would not have been made public through the Daily Citizen. I have also tried to make it clear that any addition to the 'news articles' are strictly my own opinion. If someone wants to agree with me, so be it. More power to us.
My only hope is that the creation of these pages calls enough attention to the problem to fully address the issue of Dead Man's Curve.

(The above message is strictly the opinion of X / Scapes)

Not long ago, serendipity saw fit to put the e-mail address of the Dodge County Highway Commissioner, Robert Sindelar, right in my lap. Here is your opportunity to tell him how you feel on the topic of your highway safety.

DOT plans changes
for Highway 68

By Citizen Staff

September 5, 2001

Local officials will meet on Sept. 19 with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation regarding changes to a dangerous stretch of Highway 68 known as Deadman's Curve.
Fox Lake City Administrator Greg Seefeldt told the Fox Lake City Council that emergency funding for changes to the curve has become available.
"There is funding and they are moving forward," Seefeldt said.
" The DOT has been under pressure from local officials and residents to make changes to the curve after a series of accidents over the past seven years claimed at least four lives. The latest fatal accident claimed the life of a 19-year-old Fox Lake man on Aug. 23.
The DOT acted last year to have larger warning signs and reflectors installed and the lines in the road repainted.
According to Dodge County Highway Commissioner Robert Sindelar, the latest plan calls for flattening and straightening the curve. Design details are still being worked out and the meeting on Sept. 19 will be followed by a public information meeting within one month.
Construction will begin in 2002 providing there are no problems acquiring right of way for the project.

He then decided to self educate himself at home, receiving a GED diploma with high honors on Feb. 5, 2001, from the American School of Lansing, Ill. C.J. farmed along with his father and together they had dreams and set future goals with the family business. C.J. enjoyed living the farm life, whether on a tractor in the field planting the crops, or at harvest time. He was an adventurous person who loved the sport of riding dirt bikes or trail riding on his four-wheeler ATV. He was known as an avid fisherman and hunter, having fished in Ohio, North Dakota, Minnesota, Upper Michigan and Lake Erie, having hunted bear in Ashland, and deer in the local woods. C.J. will always be remember as a person who made friends no matter where he went, who truly appreciated the kindness of friends, and expressed gratitude for their kindness.
This loving and caring young man will be sadly missed and mourned by his parents, Carlton and Brenda Schley, Fox Lake; his sisters and brother, Denise Schley, Beaver Dam, Tonya and Zacharus Schley, both at home; paternal grandfather, Oliver Schley, Fox Lake; maternal grandparents, Brian and Mary Hagen, Beaver Dam; aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Kathryn Lois Schley, on Dec. 24, 1999; one aunt, Carolyn Schley, on April 1, 1950, and one cousin, Christopher.
Friends called on Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Fox Lake Community Center. The family invited everyone to attend both services and participate in a fellowship luncheon that was held at the Fox Lake Community Center following the burial on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
The Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake, served the family.
