( Aug. 12 - Letter to the Editor)
On Friday, April 7, I had the misfortune to be one of the firemen and EMT's that responded to a call for a traffic accident.
This accident involved a snowplow and a minivan, unfortunately it also took the life of a child. Our EMT crew did all they could do for this small boy yet they could not save his life.
This is a recurring incident on this stretch of highway that could be remedied if we wanted it to. The area I am speaking of is about three quarters of a mile out of Fox Lake on State Highway 68, I guess it could be called Dodge County's "Dead Man's Curve."
Other areas in our county where there are a high number of accidents, the county and or state have done things to remedy them, but not on Highway 68. For example, the intersection of Highway A and Highway 33 was made into a four-way stop, as was the intersection of State Highway's 60 and 67. The intersection of Highway 26 and Highway E was opened up and the sight line was improved to help cut down on the loss of life. But yet, we will not do anything about one of the most treacherous curves in out area.
The land that borders this corner is valuable farmland, but no land is worth a human life, especially the life of a small child. The loss of life not only devastates the families and the loved ones of those lost, but it also affects and hurts those sheriff's deputies, EMT's and firemen that are there to try and protect and save lives. Yet, with incidents like this we are all helpless and that is not why we are in this business, we are in this to help prevent things like this from happening.
My heart goes out to the parents of this little boy and especially the father who was cradling him in his arms when we arrived.
Sir, I don't have the words to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. But please believe that we did everything we could and we didn't want to lose your son any more than you.
So, with all that said, I implore our city of Fox Lake government, along with the Dodge County government and our State of Wisconsin government to do something about that corner. Yes, it will cost money and it will be an inconvenience for a while, but in the end the troubles and the cost will be well worth it. If we can save just one life it will be money well spent.
Yet, I think it will save many lives and many nights sleep for all the parents, children and loved ones, along with all emergency personnel that are effected by the tragedies that would and should be eliminated by fixing that corner.
